DBC: Promo Item - Media

Media

The Media tab is where you can upload and manage image files and videos that users will see when shopping for a promo item on DB Commerce sites. Our new item detail page was designed to encourage use of many different media files to showcase products in the best possible light. Through our tagging system, images can be configured to display as soon as users arrive on the item detail page, or only when certain variant options have been selected.

Add Media

Users may upload one or many image files, either by dragging and dropping them into the file upload area or browsing their computer. Accepted image formats include .jpg, .png, and .gif. Individual files cannot exceed 10 MB. Recommended image specs for optimal display are 600 x 600 pixels, 15 pixels of padding on all sides, with a resolution of 72 dpi.

Customers may also wish to feature items in use through videos. To achieve this and embed video on the item detail page, administrators can paste links to YouTube and Vimeo videos below the image upload area. In this scenario, whichever image is configured as the “video thumbnail” for the video within YouTube or Vimeo will be used as the thumbnail image in DB Commerce.

When this thumbnail is selected on the item detail page, users may click the play button from the enlarged thumbnail to begin watching the video.

Media Library

As images and videos are uploaded, they’ll be aggregated into the Media Library. Hovering over a row in the Media Library will prompt action icons that will allow administrators to manage the files and affect how and where they display, view image details—including a preview of how the image will appear to users and remove any unwanted media.

The first option is to Tag Media. Here, administrators can apply tags to images that will dictate when users see them. Tagging is important, as images without tags will NOT be shown to users shopping for the item.

There are a few key tags to keep in mind when setting up a promo item:

  • Base Image: Files tagged as a Base Image will always be displayed to users when viewing a promo item, irrespective of any variant selections. These are the first images users will see upon reaching the item detail page, and as such, should be high-quality photos with strong visual impact.

This tag is recommended for “lifestyle” photos that showcase the product in use, and those that are independent of any one variant option. To tag a media item as a Base Image, administrators can select Base Image from the dropdown within the "Tag Media popup" and click Update Tag(s) to save.

  • Variant Images: Administrators may choose to only showcase some images when a user has selected certain variant options. The list of tags available is dynamically populated with the variant options (grouped by variant) that have been configured for the selected promo item.

Users can type the name of a variant or specific option into the dropdown to filter the list and make a selection. As more tags are applied, the criteria governing how frequently the image is shown to end users viewing the item become stricter. In the screenshot below, the item has variants called Color and Restaurant, and the image has been tagged with the Color variant option, "Seafoam", and the Restaurant variant option, “Sushi”.

This will have the net effect of the image only being shown to users who have selected both of those variant options on the item detail page.

In contrast, the following image has been tagged with just the “Seafoam” variant option tag, so users will see this image whenever that color is selected, regardless of which Restaurant or Size option they’ve chosen.

When variant options have been selected that cause their respective images to be shown (either via the “preselected option” designation or manually), the images will be brought to the forefront and displayed to the left of any “Base Images”, according to their display order in the Media Library. The first image listed in the Media Library tagged to a variant option (or combination of options) will be selected and displayed by default.

  • Catalog Image: Up to one image per base promo item may be designated as the Catalog Image. This is the image that will display to users within the context of a catalog featuring potentially many items.

To tag a file as the Catalog Image, simply hover over its row in the Media Library, and click the Folder icon to the far right. At that point, the Catalog Image label will show next to the thumbnail. Clicking the “x” on the label or clicking the Folder icon again will remove this tag.

Tags can be applied to multiple media items at once by clicking the checkboxes next to the desired thumbnails, clicking Update Tag(s), and selecting the appropriate tag or variant options. The number of media items to which tags are being assigned will be shown in the header of the "Tag Media popup."

Once tags have been applied to media, you can control the order in which the images appear to end users by dragging and dropping the rows that correspond to each image above one another. To do so, simply hover over a row, click the widget that appears to the left of the thumbnail, and drag it into the desired display order relative to other images.

Double-clicking a row or clicking the “Media Information” action button will bring up a summary of the media item, as well as a preview of how it will appear to end users. For images files, this is especially useful, as the preview display area is comparable to the size of the display area end users will see on the item detail page.

If an image is smaller than the recommended dimensions of 600 x 600 pixels, the preview will show the image against a background illustrating the potential display area to alert administrators that they may want to upload a larger image to make the best use of the available space on the item detail page.

If a base promo item contains many files in its Media Library, administrators can filter the list of media items to only reflect those with a certain tag, or by searching using keywords and phrases such as part of a file name, video URL, or file extension. Filters may be used in conjunction with one another for a more refined search.
