EQC: Category Tree Setup

Categories display on the Item List page. Categories are displayed in up to three levels. The user can filter items using the listed categories. The category tree determines the order the categories are displayed. If an item is not assigned to a category, a Miscellaneous category is created for the items. When a category tree is not defined, the item’s category displays in a random order.

On EQ/c the sidebar displays an arrow when lower levels of categories are available. The item count of the category is displayed in parenthesis after the category title.

The category tree can be set up as a System Default when clients use the same items, or the tree can be set up at the client level to customize the categories and display order by client.

  • Categories can display up to three levels.
  • Enter the lowest level category in Item Maintenance.
  • The category tree determines the order the categories display.
  • Item categories can be added on the fly when adding the category to the item.

Setting up the Categories in EQ/d

Before setting up the category tree, decide the order you want the categories to display on the site. A category must be created for every level that is used.

When displaying only a few items, Level 1 may be the lowest level you are using. For example, if you only have business cards and letterhead, these two categories may be the only ones you need. However, if you have business cards and letterhead for different divisions, you may want to display Business Cards as your Level 1 category and the different styles as Level 2.

The user expands Business Cards category to view the multiple styles. When a style is selected, only those business cards of that style are displayed.

Creating Categories

From EQ/d main menu, go to Inventory > Maintenance > Category Maintenance. The categories are not client specific. The listed categories can be used on any client.

Add all categories that will be used. If you are displaying apparel, you may want Apparel to be your Level 1 category and Men’s and Women’s to be Level 2 categories. You can display a Level 3 if you have different types of apparel such as Tops, Bottoms, Outerwear.

Note: When repeating the same level 2 categories under different Level 1 categories, the category ID needs to be unique. Outerwear for Women’s category would be ID WOUTW; men’s would be MOUTW. The description can be the same for both categories.

Categories are created in EQ/d > Inventory > Maintenance > Category Maintenance.

Adding a Category

The category ID field accepts up to five characters. The description accepts thirty-five characters, but only thirty characters can display on EQ/c.

  1. Click Add.
  2. Enter the Category ID. This field accepts up to five characters.
  3. Enter the Description. The description displays on EQ/c.
  4. Click Save.

Continue adding all categories that will be used on the site.

Creating a Category Tree

After all categories have been created and assigned to the items, a System Default tree can be added as a standard or added by client (more common).

System Default Category Tree

Go to eCommerce > eCommerce Maintenance > EQ Commerce Configuration > EQC Settings > Categories tab.

Client Category Tree

The setup is in Client Maintenance > eComm > EQ/c Configuration > Category tab. The page displays the default tree if one has been created in EQC Settings. To create a tree for the client, unmark the "Use System Default" check box to begin creating the tree.

Adding a Tree

Click add and select one of the options to begin creating a tree:

  • Start fresh – Do not copy - allows creating a new category tree specific to this client.
  • Copy default category tree - copies the category tree that was created in eCommerce > eCommerce Maintenance > eCommerce Configuration > EQ/c Settings > Categories tab.
  • Copy tree from another client - copy an existing tree from another client. When selected a field allows entering the client ID to copy from. Once the tree has been copied, changes to the tree only affect this client.

Adding Categories to the Tree

Select Start Fresh to add a category tree to this client.

  1. Click Add.
  2. Enter the ID of a Level 1 category in Define Item Categories popup.
  3. If there is a Level 2, enter it in the Level 2 field.
  4. Click Save.

The "EQ/c Category Tree" window displays the tree as you are building it. If you have multiple Level 2 entries, highlight Level 1 then click Add. Level 1 displays in the field, enter a Level 2 in the level 2 field.

If you are adding a Level 3, highlight Level 2 in the tree, click Add. Level 1 and Level 2 are populated; add Level 3.

The window displays a representation of the listing that shows on EQ/c. To move an entry, highlight the entry then click Move Up or Move Down until the entry is in the correct position. Level 1 can be moved to another level 1 position. Level 2 entries can only be moved within that level.

All items that are not in a category are displayed in a category named Miscellaneous. The category can be renamed in the "Miscellaneous Category Desc" field.

Category Display on EQ/c

On EQ/c when the catalog is selected, the levels are collapsed. Categories with sub- categories display an arrow. Click the arrow to view the sub-categories.

The same sub-category name can be displayed under multiple categories. But to display the correct items, the category ID must be unique.

The categories under Men’s and Women’s are displaying the same name. However, the category ID for Men’s Jackets is MJK, the category for Women’s Jacket is WJK.

When viewing Jackets under Men’s, only the items with the category ID of MJK display.

Note: Only categories that contain items display for the user on EQ/c. If the category does not have any items assigned or the user is restricted from viewing items in that category, the category is suppressed.

Item Setup

Enter in the category on Page 3 in the Category field in Item Maintenance. This is the Primary category. The category entered should reflect the lowest level of the category. The category tree determines under which category the item displays.

In this example, category Corporate Apparel is Level 1, Men’s is Level 2, Jackets & Shirts are Level 3.

The category Jacket (MJK) or Shirts (MSH) is the lowest level and is added as the category on Page 3 in the item. When no level 3 exists, add level 2 (MN) to the items. If the category does not have any sub levels, Level 1 is the category that is added to the items.

Multiple Categories

Items can display in multiple categories. The item must have a Primary category on Page 3 of Item Maintenance. Any additional categories are added in the Categories tab of the EQ/c tab.

The Categories tab displays the Primary category. To view available categories, click Show Available. Select alternate categories to display the item.

Mark only the Show Used option to view all categories the item is displayed in.

Category Reports

Category Code List

The "Category Code List" is a report of all categories that have been created. The list displays the Category ID and Description.

Inventory > Reports > Lists

EQ/c Item Category List

The report displays the items with the primary category they are assigned to. The report has two formats, Item/Category and Category/Item. eCommerce > eCommerce Reports.

The Category/Item format displays the items grouped by category for each client selected.

Item/Category format displays the items listed by selected client. The category displays below each item.

Change Category Code

Category Codes can be changed. The code is changed on all clients using that category. A backup needs to be performed, and users must be out EQ/d when changing codes. All clients should be exported to EQ/c following a code change.

Inventory > Maintenance > Change Codes.

Confirm that you have a current backup and no one else is in EQ/d.

Step 1: Click Add.

Step 2: Enter the Old ID and the New ID and click Okay.

Step 3: Repeat as needed.

Step 4: Click Begin then Yes to confirm.

Step 5: Click Cancel when complete to exit.
